A book about a house built in 1881 and demolished in 1955, set within the history of places and people that made it possible. Roland Johnson takes the reader on a tour of this 'castle', built in Brighton, Melbourne, by Mark Moss, a wealthy financier; then lays out the history of the city of Melbourne and its eccentric citizens and governments. Moss was considered the ‘ father of lawn bowls in Australia’, other occupants of Norwood were prominent in sailing and horse racing. The book tells stories about colourful early colonists, including William Rucker, Hugh Childers, Johnny Fawkner, Henry Dendy, Kalma the Healer and Tommy Bent. "Australian history is almost always picturesque; indeed, it is so curious and strange, that it is itself the chiefest novelty the country has to off er, and so it pushes the other novelties into second and third place. It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful of lies. And all of a fresh new sort, no mouldy old stale ones. It is full of surprises, and adventures, and incongruities, and contradictions, and incredibilities;
but they are all true, they all happened." (Mark Twain,
Following the Equator: a journey around the world)
